If you have an older shower chances are behind your tile is a mold resistant Sheetrock (green board). And then they use a mastic ( glue) to secure the tile to the sheetrock. But what people don’t realize is that the only thing that’s holding that tile up is glue in a piece of paper that is attached to the face of the sheetrock. The caulk and the grout prevents water from getting behind your tile. If you neglect either one water starts to get behind your tile and it starts to pull that glue away from the paper. That’s how you start to get a loose tile. Now that’s only the start of it.
At this point you could still just take that tile off and reattach it but if you keep neglecting it , once that tile becomes loose the grout around the tile starts to come out allowing more water to get behind the tile. And then the tiles that are right next to it start to become loose. Now they say that the sheetrock is mold resistant. It’s not mold proof like cement board. So after a while of water getting back there eventually the wall is going to get mold and then if you keep letting it go eventually it’s going to start to crumble and become rotten. At this point if you still don’t realize you have a problem tiles could start falling off your wall and in the most extreme cases the studs behind your walls could start to become rotten and at that point you just need to rip everything out reframe it and build a whole new bathroom.
